   DraftSight or AutoCad 2000

   I have a couple of questions, I am a retired engineer and have a small hobby shop and need to make a few simple drawings now and then. I was running AutoCad 2000 on my old XP computer that was hit by lighting a month ago and have had to upgrade my computer to windows 7 which is a 64 bit machine and will not load my version of AutoCad.
   My question is there a way that AutoCad 2000 can be loaded and ran on windows 7?
   Has anyone here had experience with DraftSight 2D drawing system, or if anyone has any other suggestions for a good basic drawing software that is inexpensive or free.

   I have the free version of Draftsight and there is a webinar going on right now. I think it's a good system, but what is being taught is basically for the pro version. I myself can't see paying $300.00 for the software plus the yearly license for something I might use 2 or 3 times a month for right now. There are a lot of videos by Draftsight on You Tube that are helpful for the free version. PM me if you need more info.

   You could try it in virtual XP mode which is a 32-bit Windows XP emulator that runs in 64-bit Windows 7. I believe it's a free download from Microsoft.

   I was faced with the exact problem, I used AC2000i (light) on XP but I could not get it to load on Window 7. After many hours of reading post I found the solution and got Autocad 2000i to load on Windows7. The problem is the setup.exe program is a 16 bit program and doesn't run correctly. The solution is to download a 32bit setup.exe from the following site: http://toastytech.com/files/Is3Engine.zip See the posts: Acad 2000 with Windows 7
   In my case I had to install AC97 first then upgrade to 2000i, my CD was an upgrade version. I believe I copied all the files off the CD to the proper 32bit installation directory then launched the replacement setup.exe to install the program. There are at least two versions of the setup.exe version 3 and version 5, 5 worked for me. Most everything worked for me as it did in XP except some online access feature and possibly some plotter stuff. I don't have a plotter any more and just use the window printer, which works fine.
   On my system AC doesn't like the CPU to go into hibernate , it becomes somewhat temperamental when the CPU wakes form hibernate if the program remains open. Not a big deal, just shut the program down, and restart and its fixed, never lost any data, it's a graphics issue.
   My next step will to SolidWorks if I could ever afford it.

   I made the switch from AutoCad to Draftsight on my home computer for similar reasons.
   A few Draftsight commands are different, but easy to learn, if you are AutoCad proficient.

   I also have the free version of Draftsight on my home computer and am very pleased with it. It has many AutoCAD like features including command line shortcuts. When I was originally trained in AutoCAD the instructor pointed out that the command line shortcuts are pretty much version independent, unlike the menus and toolbars.
   The idea was; one hand on the mouse and one on the keyboard. Very fast way to draw.
