Dealing with computer drivers isn't exactly the type of job appropriate for less experienced users, therefore finding and installing the right drivers for your devices is something that should be left to professionals and specialized software.

One utility that is designed to handle this delicate task is Driver Magician, an application that can manage all the device drivers on your system. It can perform a variety of operations to make sure your computer has the latest updates.

First of all, there's the backup utility. Driver Magician can save all your drivers and it offers you three choices in this respect: you may back up the files to folders, to a compressed file, to a self-extractor or to an auto-setup package.

The program also has a much needed restore function, which means you can easily install drivers from a previous backup. During our test it took just a few minutes to do so and everything worked without a glitch.

But perhaps the best function of this tool is the update feature that checks the drivers version installed on your computer and allows you to download and install newer versions on the fly. Nonetheless this process can take some time if there are several updates to be done, because you can only upgrade to the latest version only one driver at a time.

All things considered, Driver Magician does an excellent job when it comes to handling computer drivers. It has some very useful backup and restore capabilities, the driver update feature also works a treat so this software can easily be one of the recommended choices from its category.

Before upgrading your drivers to newer versions, it's highly recommended to create backups of your current drivers just in case the newer ones turn out to be incompatible with your computer model and operating system.

Free Driver Backup can give you a helping hand in this regard. It's a straightforward piece of software that automatically identifies your installed drivers and offers to make copies.

Don't rush through setup

Before launching the application, you shouldn't rush through the installation process. Because Free Driver Backup is supported by third parties, it wishes to download and install additional software, unrelated to its functionality. Unless you're interested in this, you can skip the offers to make a clean setup.

Autodetects your installed drivers

Once fired up, it autodetects your installed drivers recommended for backup (excluding Microsoft drivers) and shows them in a list, where you can check out the device description, type and action (recommended or Microsoft). Clicking on a driver reveals more details, such as the provider, date, version, digital signature, and number of files.

Select the drivers you want to back up

It's not mandatory to back up all drivers. Only the selected ones are taken into account for this task, and you can check the boxes of any drivers as well as click two buttons to select all or invert the selection. It's also possible to scan for all drivers, including the ones belonging to Microsoft, in order to add them to the backups.

Unfortunately, Free Driver Backup doesn't give you the possibility to modify the default saving folder. However, it has a button for opening this location in Windows Explorer without leaving the GUI.

Back up IE cookies, favorites and registry entries

Each driver is placed in its own folder that bears its name. Three plugins are supported, which are capable of saving backups of your Internet Explorer cookies, favorites and registry entries anywhere on the disk. Any of these three plugins can be disabled if you don't want to use them.

All in all, Free Driver Backup enables you to quickly create driver backups. However, there is no restore feature available, so you have to manually copy the backed up drivers to their original location to restore them to Windows.
